In the last few weeks, Hong-Kong based non-profit Community Business has produced several resources, from blogs, podcasts to tips, to help organisations deal with the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the workplace.

With fear and uncertainty gripping populations worldwide as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), we’re seeing an increase in the amount of fake news, microaggressions, grievances and employees suffering from the emotional toll of the pandemic. As the global focus on the impact of COVID-19 shifts outside of Asia to Europe and North America, leaders of countries and organisations (public and private) are trying to come to terms with its huge and unique challenges. This includes dealing with challenges like uncertainty, fear, prejudice and xenophobia spilling into the workplace.

WORRYING RISE IN XENOPHOBIA

Last month, Community Business’ former CEO Fern Ngai expressed her deep concern for the global rise in xenophobic attitudes towards people of Asian descent in the wake of the Coronavirus (as reported).

“During times of crisis, racial stereotyping and distrust of others can become default behaviour. At times like these, the need for inclusive and empathetic leadership is stronger than ever,” stated Ngai. “A balance must be struck between protecting the health and safety of your family and employees, and ensuring that workplaces remain inclusive.”

VIRTUAL EVENT

To better understand how COVID-19 triggers fear, racism and aggression in the workplace, and how to combat it, Community Business is organising an interactive virtual event to explore the topic in more detail, as well as offering lessons that can be learnt from the Asian experience of the pandemic. The interactive virtual session, entitled: COVID-19: Pandemic Of Prejudice? is scheduled to take place on 1st April 2020. It will be especially beneficial to HR/D&I professionals, as well as leaders/owners with business interests in Asia and globally.

Themes covered in the virtual session will include the emotions and issues that contribute to the increase in microaggressions being reported and experienced in our everyday interactions.  It will also cover the people management challenges that companies are facing today, as well as the proactive steps you can take to minimise workplace disruptions.

Delegates will also be able to participate and learn from discussions with other HR/D&I/leaders, as well as gain practical insights that you can apply to your company’s response strategy, policies and procedures to better tackle the COVID-19 pandemic challenges.
