Lack of women in leadership

Research carried out by diversity specialist INvolve and HR Data Hub has revealed that women in leadership earning over £70,000 are still in the minority. In fact, women represent just a quarter of people earning in excess of £73,000 in the UK. The analysis of 250,000 professionals revealed that 77% of people with salaries of £73,000+ are men. More shocking is that fact that women make up the majority (56%) of people in the lowest pay bracket (up to £17,000).

The joint survey also found that women spend longer at the lower end of the pay scale. But as they climb the career ladder and become more senior, this reduces dramatically. For example, a woman “spends an average of 10 years on £21,000 salary, compared to a man’s eight years. However, she would have only “spent five years on a £165,000 salary, compared to a man’s eight years”.

SIGNIFICANT GENDER PAY GAP

“Despite the many initiatives to address gender inequality, it’s clear that there is still a shocking lack of women in senior positions,” commented INvolve’s Founder & CEO, Suki Sandhu. According to Sandhu, this continues to “drive a significant gender pay gap”.

“With the delays to reporting on the gender pay gap this year, coupled with the negative impact of COVID-19 on pay equality, it’s vital that we continue to push for change,” explained Sandhu. “That’s why it’s more important than ever that we celebrate those who are taking action globally to drive inclusion for women. And that’s why the HERoes Women Role Model Lists are so important.”

DIVERSITY CHAMPIONS

INVolve released these figures alongside the launch of its 2020 HERoes Women Role Model Lists. The lists celebrate diversity champions who are breaking down barriers for women so they can progress in their careers.

We’re delighted to be celebrating another fantastic group of people from across the world who are collectively driving cultural change and creating workplaces where women have an opportunity to succeed and be recognised as equal to men,” added Sandhu.
