Lunar New Year

On 1st February, myGwork is hosting an event to learn more about Lunar New Year and the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ Asians during this holiday.

The Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year, is typically celebrated in China and other East Asian countries; as well as by Asian diaspora and allies around the world. The celebration marks the beginning of a new year; with monthly cycles established around the moon’s phases based on the lunar calendar.

For many in the LGBTQ+ Asian community, the Lunar New Year is a reminder of their different identities and how they intersect. In China, homosexuality is still illegal, and for many spending the festivities with their families it is not safe to come out; and as a result many LGBTQ+ Asians find this holiday challenging.

Whether it’s celebrating the holiday, experiences growing up, or exploring the intersections between being Asian and LGBTQ+, this panel seeks to share these stories and educate others. Entitled Asian & LGBTQ+: Lived Experiences, the event will explore topics like the challenges facing the Asian diaspora; the response in Asian families to being LGBTQ+; and how Asian LGBTQ+ people have lived during the pandemic.

Key panellists include James Cheng, Global Head of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion of Zimmer Biomet; Lianna Brinded, Head of Yahoo Finance UK; Amy Huang, Director of Marsh McLennan; and Scott Liu, Product Specialist at Macquarie Asset Management. You too can join the event, sponsored by Yahoo, on the 1st of February to celebrate the new Lunar Year; and learn about the challenges and experiences of being Asian and LGBTQ+.  Click here for more details.
