The Cultural Revolutions at Work: New Mixes & Generations workshop, organised by the Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus, is scheduled to take place on 19th November 2019 in Dubai. It aims to explore the potential causes of workplace conflict in the UAE, focusing on the experience, attitudes and values of members of differing generations and cultures.

The UAE’s workplace is becoming increasingly diverse, with teams formed from a variety of cultures, ethnicities, nationalities, ages, genders and languages, according to Heriot-Watt University. In fact, 83% of the UAE workforce is made up of non-nationals, so the potential for miscommunication and workplace conflict is high. Managers therefore need to be able to understand the common miscommunications and potential conflicts that can arise from diverse teams and know how to manage them, if they are to achieve successful results.

A LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Apart from providing a psychological perspective, the workshop will not only help managers to recognise the issues around workplace miscommunication, but also learn from it. Delegates can also learn how to improve decision-making and management skills, and better generate motivation, engagement and creativity within diverse, multicultural teams. This will inevitably help them to improve workplace morale and increase performance, said the organiser.

The workshop also aims to dispel some common cultural myths and demonstrate how diverse cultures working together can actually be advantageous. The event will be hosted by two of Heriot-Watt University’s Business Psychology Assistant Professors, Greg Fantham and Lucy Bolton.
