DiversityInc has announced the US companies that have made it on its Top 50 List this year. The 2020 DiversityInc Top 50 List recognises the top companies in the US for diversity and inclusion management, excelling in areas such as hiring, retaining and promoting women, minorities, people with disabilities, LGBTQ and veterans. Marriott International has been recognised as the number one company for diversity across all industries in 2020, followed by Hilton, Eli Lilly and Company, ADP, Accenture, Mastercard and Comcast NBCUniversal.

According to DiversityInc, its rankings are determined by an objective methodology calculating factors such as talent pipeline, equitable talent development (including commitments to mentorship and philanthropy), CEO/leadership commitment and supplier diversity. The empirical data for the rankings is provided by a 300-question survey filled out by personnel at the participating companies.

MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL LEADS THE WAY

All the companies mentioned in the list have made great strides in diversity, equity and inclusion. Marriott International secured the top slot in this year’s D&I ranking – it’s also the highest-ranking hospitality company on the list for more than 10 years and the only one to have achieved the top ranking. 

Commenting on being recognised as the top company for diversity across industries on the this year’s Top 50 Companies for Diversity list, David  Rodriguez, Marriott International Global Chief Human Resources Officer, stated: “Being named #1 for diversity at this moment in history feels especially meaningful. It takes generations of inclusive leadership, deep commitment and conviction to create a culture of belonging where all associates are treated with dignity and respect. This culture has always been the foundation for our business of hospitality. Marriott’s success in the D&I space is based on a 360-degree cultural approach encompassing results-oriented metrics and initiatives supporting associates, customers, suppliers and owners, according to the international hotel chain.  This approach had led to signature accomplishments, such as collaborating with leading human rights nonprofits on human trafficking prevention training and leveraging TakeCare, its award-winning employee wellbeing programme, to advance the practice of D&I in the modern workplace.

SODEXO ACHIEVES HALL OF FAME STATUS

Food services and facilities management firm Sodexo has also made the list for several years. In fact, this is the 12th year Sodexo has been recognised as a top diversity leader by DiversityInc. It has also been ranked among DiversityInc 2020 Top 50 Speciality Lists using the same criteria. It ranked second as a Top Company for Supplier Diversity and ranked fifth as a Top Company for People with Disabilities. 

This year, Sodexo has also been recognised as a 2020 Hall of Fame CompanyDuring the first-ever virtual event, DiversityInc, announced this year’s Hall of Fame companies, with is made up of companies that have ranked number 1 on DiversityInc’s annual Top 50 Companies list since 2012. Among Sodexo in this year’s Hall of Fame is AT&T, EY, Johnson & Johnson, Kaiser Permanente, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and PwC.

RANDSTAD REWARDED FOR STAFFING EXCELLENCE

For the second consecutive year, Randstad US secured a place in the 2020 Top 50 Companies List. It’s actually the first major staffing firm to earn a spot on the DiversityInc Top 50. As the world’s largest staffing company, Randstad US recognises its responsibility for supporting diversity in the workforce and has long been committed to leveraging the strengths of people from different backgrounds and perspectives to build a more inclusive workforce, marketplace and business.

Randstad has furthered that commitment by hosting an annual ‘Day of Understanding’ to promote D&I, advocating for military veterans in staffing (and receiving three bronze awards from Military Friendly) and pledging to support equal pay. In addition, more than 60% of leadership roles at the company are held by women, and women make up 33% of its executive board.

McCORMICK & COMPANY – FOURTH TIME WINNER

McCormick & Company, the global leader in flavour, was recognised on DiversityInc’s 2020 Top 50 list of Companies for Diversity for the fourth year in a row. McCormick came 44th in this year’s ranking.

McCormick’s ranking comes on the heels of its 2019 Purpose-led Performance Progress Report, which outlines the company’s advancement toward its 2025 goals, including those focused on D&I. To date, McCormick has increased the number of women and ethnically diverse talent in senior leadership positions across the company and on its Board of Directors. McCormick’s other diversity goals aim to leverage employee ambassador groups and expand leadership development programes.

TOYOTA MOVES UP ‘IMPRESSIVE’ 38 SPOTS TO No. 10

DiversityInc ranked Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) number 10 in this year’s ranking – up from 18  last year. Toyota is the only automotive manufacturer ranked in the Top 10 which has moved up an impressive 38 spots on the list since 2013. “When it comes to D&I, each year we try to set new challenges and new goals with a plan for attaining them.  This recognition gives us encouragement that we’re on the right path because we know it’s a journey, not a destination,” said Sandra Phillips Rogers, Chief Diversity Officer and Chief Legal Officer, TMNA.

Toyota attributes its growing reputation as a leader in diversity to its practice of inspiring, encouraging and modelling D&I throughout the organisation. This practice applies to the company’s relationships both internally and externally.

“Across North America, we are building and strengthening partnerships with allies who embrace a common goal – to create a more inclusive society that celebrates and is enriched by our differences, which we view as an especially important attribute during these challenging times,” added Rogers. 

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Toyota teamed up with non-profit and private sector allies to provide funding, expertise and in-kind donations for at-risk and disproportionately impacted communities. For example, community service announcements were created to bring awareness and credible information to the African American and Hispanic communities as part of Toyota’s overall response efforts.

SOUTHERN COMPANY ACHIEVES TOP D&I SLOTS

Southern Company earned the 26th spot on the 2020 DiversityInc’s Top 50 Companies for Diversity ranking. It was also recognised on multiple specialty lists, including:

  • No. 2 for Top Company for Veterans, moving up 7 spots from No. 9 last year 
  • No. 5 for Top Company for Board of Directors 
  • No. 7 for Top Company for Supplier Diversity 
  • No. 8 for Top Company for Employee Resource Groups

DiversityInc announced that Southern Company moved up 7 spots, landing at number 26 from 33 last year on the Top 50 list. This is the fifth consecutive year that Southern Company has been recognised as a Top 50 Company for D&I, as well as recognition for the system’s efforts to hire, retain and promote women, minorities, people with disabilities, LGBTQ and veterans.

KEYBANK CELEBRATES MULTIPLE D&I ACHIEVEMENTS

In recognition of its continued commitment to and advancement of its DE&I practices, KeyBank has earned the 35th place on the 2020 DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list. It was also recognised on multiple specialty lists, including:

  • Top 29 Companies for LGBT employees for the second consecutive year 
  • Top 16 Companies for People with Disabilities for the second consecutive year 
  • Top 13 Companies for Veterans for the first year
