Global legal firm DWF has joined forces with Aspiring Solicitors to launch a work placement scheme for individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds aspiring to pursue a career in law.

The programme, called Ethnic Minority Access Scheme, will help six individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds gain valuable paid work experience at a global legal business, over a period of one week.

During the placement candidates will undertake live legal work and will be paired with a supervisor and a mentor. They will get the opportunity to work in DWF’s commercial practice and will be based in London and Manchester. The first group will begin the programme in April 2021 and DWF will run the programme yearly.

TARGETED DIVERSITY PROGRAMME

Seema Bains, Partner & Head of Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Group, DWF

Commenting on the scheme, DWF’s Partner and Head of Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Group, Seema Bains stated: “We’ve developed the Ethnic Minority Access Scheme with Aspiring Solicitors to help increase the representation of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people in the legal sector. Unfortunately our industry still does not reflect the society we live in, and that really needs to change. This targeted programme will hopefully give candidates the opportunity they need to gain exposure to commercial law in practice and help progress their legal careers.  We’re excited to begin the application process soon and welcome the first group of candidates in April 2021.”

“It is fantastic to be working with DWF on this new work placement scheme to help ensure the firm hires the best Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic aspiring solicitors,” added Chris White, CEO and Founder of Aspiring Solicitors. “This scheme demonstrates a tangible commitment and focus for improving access and opportunities for underrepresented groups in the profession. Both Aspiring Solicitors and DWF look forward to the positive results that flow from this scheme.”
