Over 70% of women in the US want the government to do more to tackle the wage gap, confirmed the latest findings from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR).

The report which highlights pay inequality in the US on Equal Pay Day (Wednesday 24th March 2021), reveals that women want the Government to intervene to fix the the wage gap. Three out of four women want all companies with 100 or more employees to report gender and pay information.

A further 80% of women want companies to include a wage or salary range in job postings. Additionally, two out of three women want the Government to prohibit employers from asking job applicants about previous pay rates.

WAGE GAP IS ‘FIXABLE’

Commenting on the report findings, IWPR’s President and CEO C Nicole Mason, stated: “There is no good reason for gender differences in earnings. The wage gap is a fixable problem.”

The latest IWPR report reveals that women in the US continue to be paid less in almost every occupation than men. Its analysis of 2020’s weekly earning data finds that of the 120 occupations (with enough data for calculating the gender wage gap), only five had higher earnings for women than men; and those earnings differences were marginal. Additionally the wage gap is wider for Latina and Black women.
