Throughout February, organisations and communities will celebrate LGBT+ History Month across the UK.

Organised by Schools Out UK, this year’s event celebrates over 45 years of campaigning for LGBT+ inclusion. 2022 also sees the 50th anniversary of the very first Pride March in the UK in 1972.

This year’s theme is Politics In Art: ‘The Arc Is Long’; as depicted in this year’s badge above designed by Finn Collett. “A popular slogan of the early Gay Rights Movement of the time was ‘the personal is political’; and art is probably the most individual of pastimes,” said the organiser. “So it seemed logical, to focus on art as the theme for LGBTQ+ History Month 2022.”

PROMOTING EQUALITY & DIVERSITY

The overall aim of LGBT+ History Month is to promote equality and diversity for the benefit of the public, according to the organiser. This is done by:

  • Increasing the visibility of LGBT+ people; their history, lives and their experiences in the curriculum and culture of educational and other institutions, and the wider community.
  • Raising awareness and advancing education on matters affecting the LGBT+ community.
  • Working to make educational and other institutions safe spaces for all LGBT+ communities.
  • Promoting the welfare of LGBT+ people, by ensuring that the education system recognises and enables LGBT+ people to achieve their full potential; so they contribute fully to society and lead fulfilled lives, thus benefiting society as a whole.
