Why Responsible Business Matters
Responsible business is no longer simply a reputational issue, it has become a strategic imperative. Organisations today are judged not only by financial performance, but also by how they lead, treat people, contribute to society and respond to global challenges.
Research consistently shows that organisations with strong cultures of inclusion, wellbeing and ethical leadership are better placed to:
- attract and retain talent
- build trust with employees, customers and stakeholders
- innovate and adapt successfully
- strengthen long-term resilience
- create sustainable value
At the same time, expectations continue to rise. Employees increasingly expect organisations to demonstrate purpose, fairness and transparency. Investors are paying closer attention to environmental, social and governance performance. Customers are choosing brands that align with their values, while communities expect organisations to make meaningful contributions beyond commercial success.
The data reflects this shift:
- 94% of employees expect CEOs to lead with purpose, yet only 6% believe their leaders consistently do so, according to the 2026 State of Moral Leadership in Business report from The HOW Institute for Society.
- Around seven in 10 employees worldwide say it is important to work in organisations that prioritise workplace DEI, according to research from The Conference Board.
- Companies with diverse executive teams are 39% more likely to outperform financially, according to McKinsey’s Diversity Matters Even More report.
These are no longer simply cultural issues – they are leadership, workforce and business issues shaping the future of work. Fair Play Talks explores the evidence, leadership and ideas helping organisations navigate these changing expectations—and the human impact of the decisions they make.
